What is VOIP(Voice Over IP) and what can it do for me?
VOIP stands for Voice Over the Internet Protocol and is sometimes simply called Internet Telephony. It works by converting a voice signal into data which is then transmitted over the Internet like any other data such as an e-mail. This information is then re-assembled at the other end and converted back into an audible voice. The main advantage of doing this is that most people these days have a fixed cost local internet connection which allows them to transmit data anywhere in the world at no extra cost. This same principle applies to VOIP so you effectively get calls to anywhere in the world at no extra charge.
Whilst many new players are now emerging, it is clear that at present Skype is the market leader having secured 50m users in two years. "Skypers" now form an "ecosystem" of their own with devotees developing their own language. Skypers don't "phone" other Skype users - they "Skype" them!
