What is a firewall and how is it different to anti-virus software?

A firewall is an extra layer of security built into computers which restrict access to systems from the outside world. Using a physical security analogy, a firewall is equivalent to a door lock on a perimeter door or on a door to a room inside of the building - it permits only authorized users such as those with a key or access card to enter. A firewall has built-in filters that can disallow unauthorized or potentially dangerous material from entering the system. It also logs attempted intrusions.

Using the analogy above, you can imagine that an intruder with the correct authorisation or key can still get through the door. This is where your anti-virus software would come in. Anti-virus software is like the guard behind the door that "frisks" the intruder to check that they are what they appear to be and that they are not carrying any "weapons".

A firewall can be software or hardware or even both, which is what we recommend. If you have broadband you are well advised to purchase at least one, there is always a balance between adequate protection and cost.

With a software firewall you can instantly see what applications have access to the Internet and you can add programs to the list or delete programs as you wish. Used together, a hardware firewall device and software firewall you are on your way to being well protected.
